Protein Quality

DIAAS score: 1.30

  • What DIAAS means: the Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score measures how well a protein's amino acids are absorbed in the small intestine and how closely the profile matches human requirements. Under the FAO framework a score of 1.0 or above is classified as a high-quality protein.

Reference points: whey protein isolate sits at approximately 1.09–1.25, soy protein isolate at approximately 0.90, pea protein isolate alone at approximately 0.80, and rice protein alone considerably lower. Blending complementary plant proteins raises the combined score above either source on its own.

What does a DIAAS score of 1.30 actually mean?

DIAAS stands for Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score. It measures how much of a protein's essential amino acids are genuinely absorbed in the small intestine, and how closely that profile matches what the human body needs. Under the FAO framework, anything at 1.0 or above is classified as a high-quality protein. At 1.30, this sits well above that threshold.

Why does DIAAS matter more than the protein number on the front of the bag?

Because grams of protein and grams of usable protein are not the same thing. Two powders can both claim 25 g per serve while delivering very different amounts of absorbed essential amino acids, depending on the source and its limiting amino acid. DIAAS is the measure that accounts for that difference, which is why it has become the standard the current nutrition literature relies on.

How does this compare to whey protein?

It is competitive with whey on protein quality, and it is dairy free. Published DIAAS figures for whey protein isolate are commonly cited around 1.09, though values vary by source and testing method. The practical differences are elsewhere: whey digests faster, while plant protein sits somewhere between whey and casein, and this product suits anyone avoiding dairy or who tolerates it poorly.

Is this a complete protein?

Yes. It provides all nine essential amino acids in a complete profile, delivering 10.2 g of essential amino acids and 4.8 g of BCAAs per serve. Most single-source plant proteins fall short on a limiting amino acid — pea is low in methionine, rice is low in lysine — which is why complementary plant proteins are used together rather than alone.

What is it made from?

Plant Protein DIAAS Complex 1.30 (Pea Protein Isolate, Rice Protein Isolate (92%), Natual flavours, sweetener (monk fruit extract), thickener (guar gum), pink salt

How much protein is in each serve?

Each serve delivers 25 g of protein, 10.2 g of essential amino acids and 4.8 g of BCAAs. A 1 kg bag contains 29 serves at 34g per serve. For most adults that is a substantial contribution to daily protein intake, though total intake across the whole day matters more than any single serve.

What does it taste like, and which flavour should I pick?

It has an unusually mild flavour for a plant protein, which is the thing customers mention most. Vanilla is the most versatile and the one reviewers name most often — it disappears into oats and smoothies without dominating. Chocolate is the richest. Banana, Strawberry and Mango work best blended with fruit rather than shaken with water alone.

Does it mix well, or does it go gritty?

It mixes easily in a standard shaker without a blender. Plant proteins have a reputation for chalkiness and this one is noticeably smoother than most — customers report it blending cleanly into smoothies, oats and overnight oats. Shake for 15 to 20 seconds. For the fruit flavours, blending with frozen fruit gives the best texture.

Will it mix in cold water on the trail?

Yes, which is the main reason we stock it. It dissolves in cold water in a shaker or a drink bottle, so you do not need a blender, hot water or fuel to use it in the backcountry. That makes it genuinely practical for multi-day hikes, where most protein sources are either too heavy or need cooking.

How do I carry it on a multi-day hike?

Pre-portion single serves into small zip-lock bags rather than carrying the 1 kg bag. Each serve is around 34g, so a five-day trip adds roughly 170g to your food bag. Several of our customers add a serve straight into their Radix breakfast before sealing the bag, which saves a separate mixing step at camp.

Is it vegan, gluten free and dairy free?

Yes to all three. It is entirely plant-based, contains no dairy, and is gluten free. Soy free and nut free. For the full allergen statement, see the ingredients listed in the specifications section on this page.

Does it contain added sugar or artificial sweeteners?

There is no added sugar — the only sugars present occur naturally in the ingredients. The sweetener used is Monk Fruit Extract, a natural sweetener

Is it tested for banned substances?

HASTA™ batch testing

Can I use this if I'm trying to manage my weight?

It is a high-protein food with no added sugar, and protein contributes to feeling full, which some people find helpful within a calorie-controlled diet. It is not a weight-loss product and we make no weight-loss claims for it. If you are managing your weight for health reasons, an Accredited Practising Dietitian is a better guide than any product page.

When should I take it?

Whenever it helps you hit your daily protein target — total daily intake matters more than timing. Common uses are after training, with breakfast, or as a way to lift the protein content of a meal that is otherwise light on it. On multi-day hikes, most people take it at the end of the day alongside their evening meal.

Is it good value at $58.90?

That works out to $2.03AUD per serve. Cheaper plant proteins exist, but comparing sticker prices between powders with different protein quality and serve sizes is misleading — cost per gram of usable protein is the honest comparison. You can also buy any six Radix products and save 15%.

Do you ship from Australia?

Yes. We hold stock and dispatch from our store in Helensburgh, NSW. We are a family-owned Australian retailer and an authorised Radix stockist.

How should I store it, and how long does it last?

Store the bag sealed in a cool, dry place.

Can I use it in cooking and baking?

Yes. It works well stirred into oats, overnight oats and porridge, and it can be baked into protein bars, pancakes and muffins. Bear in mind that heat changes the texture of any protein powder, so baked results will differ from a shake. Start by replacing a small proportion of the flour rather than a large one.
