The Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 70L is the size you buy when you've stopped pretending you pack light. A week of clothes, or a full camping kit including sleeping bag, mat and boots.


Four Black Hole Cubes fit in the base with room above. It weighs 1,365 g empty — light for the volume, though 70 litres of gear gets heavy fast.

The padded base matters at this size, because a loaded duffel gets dropped rather than placed. Burly exterior daisy chains let you lash a mat, tripod or wet boots to the outside.

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Check-in only. At 66 cm long it's well past any cabin limit.
  • No sling strap. Haul handles and backpack straps only.
  • Weather-resistant, not waterproof. Fine in rain; not a dry bag.
  • Packing cubes aren't optional. 70 litres is a deep hole to lose a charger in.

55L or 70L?

55L — four or five days of clothes, or a weekend of camping gear. The everyday answer, and what most people should buy.

70L — a week or more, two people sharing one bag, or bulky gear like sleeping bags and wetsuits.

Also worth knowing: the old 90L is the current 70L. Patagonia recalibrated its volumes — same bag, more accurate number.

Should I get the 55L or the 70L?

The 55L suits most people. Go 70L for trips of a week or more, two people sharing, or bulky gear. If you're unsure, the 55L is the safer buy.

Can I use it as carry-on?

No. At 66 cm long it's beyond any Australian cabin limit — this is check-in luggage.

Is it waterproof?

Weather-resistant, not waterproof. The zips aren't sealed. For genuine waterproofing see the Exped Tempest 70.

Can I carry 70 litres as a backpack?

For short distances, yes. There's no frame or hip belt, so a full load sits low and unsupported. Carpark to campsite, not a hike.

Old 90L vs new 70L?

Same physical bag. Patagonia corrected how it measures volume across the range.

What are the daisy chains for?

Reinforced webbing loops on the outside, for clipping on a sleeping mat, tripod, helmet or wet boots.
