Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55L

The Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55L is the bag most outdoor people end up owning. Twenty years in the range, and people are still using decade-old ones.

Fifty-five litres covers four or five days of clothes, or a weekend of camping gear including a sleeping bag and boots — roughly three Black Hole Cubes with room to spare. The body is weather-resistant recycled ripstop with a TPU-film laminate: fine in rain or a wet ute tray, but not a dry bag.

Carry it by the reinforced haul handles or clip on the padded removable straps and wear it as a backpack.

Worth knowing before you buy

  • No sling strap. Top handles and backpack straps only.
  • Minimal organisation. One side pocket, two mesh lid pockets. Plan on packing cubes.
  • Unstructured. A heavy load sags low on your back — good for short carries, not long ones.
  • Borderline for carry-on. Around 58 cm long, so expect to check it on strict airlines.

A note on the 55L size

Patagonia recalibrated its volumes. The old 60L is the current 55L — same physical bag, more accurate measurement. The old 90L became the 70L, and the old 120L became the 100L.

Need more room? The 70L suits a week or more.

Common questions

How much is it in Australia?

From $199.92, down from $249.90. Price varies by colourway. We're an official Australian stockist, so that's genuine local stock with full warranty support.

Is it waterproof?

No — weather-resistant. It sheds rain and spray but isn't a sealed dry bag. For genuine waterproofing see the Exped Tempest range.

Can I wear it as a backpack?

Yes. The padded straps are removable and stow away. Comfortable for short carries, less so with a full load over distance.

Old 60L vs new 55L — what changed?

Nothing physical. Patagonia corrected how it measures volume. Same bag, more honest number.

Does it have a shoulder strap?

No sling strap — top handles and backpack straps only. This is the most common surprise for first-time buyers.

Will it fit as carry-on?

It's borderline at roughly 58 cm. Plan to check it, or choose the CarryOut 40L if cabin compliance matters.
