Test patches will provide a good indication of likely coverage. In general, when applied in\nwet-on-wet coats to weathered wood, one gallon will cover from 125 square feet to 250 square feet; on\nnew, relatively non-porous wood, from 250 - 450+ square feet. If necessary or desired, AFM Naturals\nClear Penetrating Oil may be thinned with Safecoat. Naturals Diluent\/Reducer No. 4099. Thinning may\nimprove flow, absorption and drying, but will reduce solids, potentially affecting performance.\n\u003ch3\u003eBefore Use\u003c\/h3\u003e\nSafecoat Naturals Clear Penetrating Oil can be used on most unsealed wood, new or weathered. Surfaces\nmust be cleaned of any grease, oils, dust, dirt, wax, prior coatings, adhesives and other foreign\nmaterials. Most woods should be sanded first with 120-150 grit sandpaper (when sanding, move in the\ndirection of the grain; never sand across the grain of the wood). Note that product will generally\nappear lighter on wood where finer grit sandpaper is used, as finer sanding will burnish the wood and\ninhibit penetration. Wipe surface with a damp sponge or cloth to remove dust. Surface must be completely\ndry and stable before application. Moisture content of the wood must be below 12%.\n\u003ch3\u003eApplication\u003c\/h3\u003e\nEvery species of wood, and every piece of wood within a species, is unique and will react differently to\na natural product. For example, soft or porous woods such as pine, alder, birch, fir, cedar, and redwood\nmay absorb oil unevenly; some woods may contain tannins and other extractives that will bleed through to\nthe surface and affect appearance. Accordingly, ALWAYS conduct several test patches or a test coat to\nensure compatibility and acceptability of appearance before application to the entire surface. Stir oil\nthoroughly prior to, and occasionally during, use. Although Safecoat Naturals Clear Penetrating Oil\ncontains no formaldehyde or other toxic ingredients and requires no special protective equipment to\napply, assure good ventilation throughout use and while product is drying. Protect adjacent surfaces not\nto be coated, including plants. Apply one even coat, working with the grain, using a premium quality,\nwide bristle brush, a roller (followed immediately by back brushing), or an airless sprayer with a 0.11\nor larger tip and 700 - 800 psi (lowest pressure to achieve a full wet spray without atomization). Allow\nthe finish to penetrate for 10 - 15 minutes, then APPLY A SECOND COAT WHILE FIRST COAT IS STILL WET.\nAllow the second coat to penetrate for 10 - 15 minutes, then wipe off any oil that has not penetrated\ninto the wood with a clean, absorbent cloth (see warning about spontaneous combustion elsewhere on this\ndata sheet). Do not allow oil to puddle. If desired and wood is still absorptive, another coat may be\napplied after 24 hours, but note that additional coats will inhibit the ability to absorb stains or hard\nsurface sealers.\n\u003cp\u003eNote: these instructions are intended to be general only and not exhaustive. The applicator should\ndetermine what preparation and techniques are best suited to the specific surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eDrying\/Curing Time\u003c\/h3\u003e\nUnder normal conditions (70 degrees F and 50% humidity) and with good ventilation, wood treated will be\ndry and ready for use in 24 - 48 hours.
